The Cleveland Guardians placed right-hander Carlos Carrasco on the 15-day injured list on Friday because of a left hip strain.
In a corresponding move, the Guardians recalled rookie left-hander Joey Cantillo from Triple-A Columbus, and he started the first game of a doubleheader Friday against the host Minnesota Twins.
Carrasco, 37, was injured during the 5-3 loss Wednesday to the Arizona Diamondbacks. The move is retroactive to Thursday.
He is 3-10 with a 5.64 ERA, 33 walks and 89 strikeouts in 103 2/3 innings over 21 starts. In 15 seasons with Cleveland (2009-11, 2013-20, 2024) and the New York Mets (2021-23), Carrasco is 110-103 with two saves and a 4.14 ERA in 324 games (277 starts).
Cantillo, 24, entered Friday with an 0-1 record, 7.36 ERA, three walks and seven strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings over two starts.
“His stuff has been really good, and actually, he’s controlling the running game really well,” Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said. “Just the command is going to be the issue with Joey, but we’re working really hard.”
In other moves Friday, Cleveland recalled outfielder Will Brennan and right-hander Peter Strzelecki from Columbus and optioned rookie outfielder Angel Martinez to the Triple-A affiliate.
Brennan, 26, is batting .233 with eight home runs and 24 RBIs in 77 games with the Guardians. Strzelecki, 29, is 0-0 with a 0.87 ERA, one walk and eight strikeouts in 10 1/3 innings over eight relief appearances for Cleveland. Martinez, 22, was 26-for-110 (.236) with three homers and nine RBIs in 31 games for the Guardians.
