Padres force extras, sink Marlins as win streak hits 6

Miami Marlins, San Diego Padres

In his homecoming, Manny Machado drove in three runs — including two in the decisive 10th inning — as the San Diego Padres defeated the host Miami Marlins 6-2 on Friday night.

San Diego has won six straight games, the longest active streak in the majors.

Padres rookie Jackson Merrill nearly upstaged Machado by going 3-for-4 and finishing a double shy of the cycle. Merrill, who also had two steals, two RBIs and a stellar catch in center, led off the ninth with a homer to send the game to extra innings.

Miami reliever George Soriano blew a save chance in the ninth. Brett de Geus (0-1) took the loss in his Marlins debut, allowing four runs (three earned) in the 10th. San Diego’s Jason Adam (7-4) earned the win with a scoreless ninth.

Neither starter earned a decision.

Miami’s Edward Cabrera threw seven scoreless innings in his longest outing of the season, allowing four hits and three walks. Injury-prone through much of his career, Cabrera threw a season-high 106 pitches.

San Diego’s Martin Perez also pitched seven innings, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks with six strikeouts.

The Padres used three players with Miami ties. Luis Arraez, traded by the Marlins to the Padres in May, went 1-for-5. Machado, a Miami native, went 2-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs. Tanner Scott, acquired from the Marlins at this year’s deadline, pitched a scoreless 10th inning.

Miami opened the scoring in the fourth on solo homers by Jake Burger and Jonah Bride on consecutive pitches. Burger’s blast on a 1-1 cutter went 428 feet to left. Bride’s shot on a first-pitch sinker traveled 395 feet to left.

San Diego had its best chance to score against Cabrera after Merrill hit a one-out triple to right in the seventh. However, Merrill — going on contact — was thrown out at the plate on David Peralta’s grounder to third baseman Emmanuel Rivera.

After an infield single by Ha-Seong Kim, Marlins manager Skip Schumaker made a mound visit before deciding not to pull Cabrera.

Cabrera rewarded Schumaker’s faith, striking out Luis Campusano on a high changeup.

San Diego got on the board in the eighth as Jurickson Profar smashed his second double and scored on Machado’s two-bagger. Xander Bogaerts nearly had an RBI hit, but center fielder Cristian Pache raced in to grab the inning-ending out.

Merrill tied the score on the first pitch of the ninth, connecting on a slider from Soriano. Merrill’s homer went 400 feet to right-center.

In the 10th, automatic runner Tyler Wade scored on Jake Cronenworth’s groundout. Machado followed with a two-run double and Merrill had an RBI single.
