Logan Webb continues winning ways as Giants beat Tigers

Logan Webb

Logan Webb won his third consecutive start, new closer Ryan Walker converted his first save opportunity of the season and the San Francisco Giants made it two in a row over the visiting Detroit Tigers with a 3-1 victory Saturday afternoon.

Brett Wisely drove in two and scored a third in a three-run fifth inning for the Giants, who won for the 12th time in their last 15 games.

Coming off consecutive victories in which he had allowed a total of one run, Webb (10-8) was every bit as good Saturday to secure his fourth straight season with at least 10 wins.

Webb limited the Tigers to one run on four hits in seven innings. He walked one and struck out eight.

The lone run the All-Star surrendered gave Detroit the lead in the fifth. Parker Meadows tripled with one out and scored on Dillon Dingler’s ensuing groundout.

The Giants parried in the bottom of the fifth after Mike Yastrzemski and Jerar Encarnacion led off with successive singles against the Tigers reliever Brant Hurter (0-1).

Wisely followed with a go-ahead double and dashed home on Heliot Ramos’ single two batters later to give San Francisco a 3-1 lead.

After Tyler Rogers threw a 1-2-3 eighth, the Giants called on Walker to replace Camilo Doval, who was demoted to the minors earlier in the week.

Walker, who saved an 8-6 win at the Philadelphia Phillies last season by getting just one out in the 10th inning, worked a full ninth in a save situation for the first time in his two-year career.

The right-hander put the potential tying runs on base with a one-out walk to Bligh Madris and a single by Meadows, but then struck out both Dingler and Javier Baez for his second career save.

Yastrzemski finished with a pair of singles for the Giants, who opened the interleague series with a 3-2, walk-off win Friday.

Meadows had two hits for the Tigers, who were out-hit 6-5 en route to the 12th loss in their last 17 games.
