Logan Gilbert, M’s blank Mets for second straight game

Mets, Mariners

Logan Gilbert pitched seven scoreless innings as Seattle defeated the visiting New York Mets 4-0 Saturday night, the Mariners’ major-league-leading 13th shutout of the season.

Randy Arozarena and Justin Turner, both acquired at the trade deadline, each went 2-for-3 with doubles for the Mariners, who won their third game in a row to remain tied with Houston atop the American League West. Arozarena scored twice and Turner had two RBIs.

The Mets were blanked for a second straight night at T-Mobile Park and dropped a half-game behind Atlanta in the chase for the National League’s third and final wild-card playoff berth.

Gilbert (7-8), who had lost all three of his starts since being a member of the AL All-Star team — despite allowing only one earned run in two of those — gave up just three hits, two to Francisco Lindor. The right-hander walked one and struck out six.

Lindor led off the first with a line-drive single to left field but the Mariners turned a highlight-reel double play to get out of the inning. J.D. Martinez hit a grounder up the middle, with second baseman Jorge Polanco making a diving stop. Polanco flipped the ball from his glove to shortstop Leo Rivas, who made a barehanded catch and stepped on the bag before firing to first to nab Martinez.

The Mets didn’t get another hit until Lindor lined a single up the middle with two outs in the sixth. Martinez led off the seventh with a single to center but was stranded at first as Gilbert struck out the next two batters and got a weak groundout to third.

Mets lefty Sean Manaea (8-5), who pitched seven scoreless innings with double-digit strikeouts in each of his previous two starts, struggled with his command and lasted just three innings, throwing 85 pitches. Manaea allowed three runs on four hits, with five walks and three strikeouts.

The Mariners scored three times in the bottom of the first. Victor Robles and Arozarena both doubled down the left field line, making it 1-0. With one out, Turner lined an RBI double off the right field wall. An out later, Mitch Haniger grounded a single up the middle to score Turner with the third run.

The Mariners tacked on a run against reliever Phil Maton in the seventh. Arozarena lined a one-out single to center and Cal Raleigh walked. Turner grounded a single to left to score Arozarena and make it 4-0.
