Corbin Carroll’s bat, glove carry D-backs past Marlins

marlins, diamondbacks

Corbin Carroll homered, scored twice and made a sliding catch in right field that likely saved two runs as the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the host Miami Marlins 3-1 on Tuesday night.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. also went deep for the Diamondbacks, who will try for a three-game sweep on Wednesday.

Carroll, the 2023 National League Rookie of the Year, went 2-for-4. He has 14 homers on the season and five in his past 10 games.

Arizona starter Eduardo Rodriguez (2-0) allowed six hits, one walk and one run in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out five.

Justin Martinez pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn his fourth save.

Miami starter Edward Cabrera (2-5) gave up four hits, three walks and three runs in six innings. He fanned three.

Arizona opened the scoring in the first inning as Carroll hit a leadoff single, advanced on a balk and came home on Joc Pederson’s one-out single.

With two outs in the fifth, Carroll hit an opposite-field homer to left to make it 2-0.

Miami got on the board in the bottom of the fifth as Cristian Pache hit a leadoff double and scored on Xavier Edwards’ two-out single.

Arizona stretched its lead to 3-1 in the sixth as Gurriel hit a 414-foot homer to left. It was his 15th long ball of the season.

Miami threatened in the bottom of the sixth as Jonah Bride walked and Connor Norby doubled to put runners on second and third with one out.

However, reliever Ryan Thompson entered and got Otto Lopez on a popout before pinch hitter Jesus Sanchez smacked a 110 mph liner to right. Carroll raced to his right to make a stellar catch.

Arizona rested catcher Adrian Del Castillo, a Miami native who had six RBIs on Monday in his first pro game in his hometown.

Two players who were with the Marlins last month — reliever A.J. Puk and first baseman Josh Bell — played for the Diamondbacks. Puk pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Bell went 0-for-4.
