The Dolphins plan to release veteran quarterback Mike White, leaving Skylar Thompson as the backup to Tua Tagovailoa, the Miami Herald reported Sunday.
The team also is releasing tight end Jody Fortson, per the report.
Both White and Thompson played Friday night in the Dolphins’ preseason finale against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a 24-12 loss, with Thompson seeing more reps. White was 5-for-9 passing for 37 yards and took a sack. Thompson completed 19 of 27 passes for 190 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.
White, 29, was a fifth-round draft pick of the Dallas Cowboys in 2018 and spent two seasons with the New York Jets (2021-22) and last season with the Dolphins. In 14 appearances, White has started seven games with a 2-5 record, completing 62.6 percent of his career passes for 2,219 yards with nine touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
White had one year remaining on the two-year, $8 million contract he signed last year.
Fortson, 28, played in 19 games (one start) with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2021-22, catching 14 passes for 155 yards with four touchdowns. He spent the 2023 season on injured reserve and signed with the Dolphins in May.
Durham Smythe and Jonnu Smith are listed as the top tight ends on the Miami depth chart.
