Marlins complete series victory over Giants

Marlins, Giants

Jonah Bride doubled to tie the game, then scored the go-ahead run in a two-run sixth inning as the Miami Marlins defeated the host San Francisco Giants 7-5 on Sunday.

Kyle Stowers hit a three-run homer and four Marlins relievers protected a late lead with four shutout innings.

The Marlins (51-86) won the last two games of the three-game series, sending the Giants (68-70) to a fourth loss in their last five contests and leaving them two games under .500 with just 24 to go.

The Giants used a three-run fifth to go up 5-4, but the Marlins came right back to take the lead in the sixth after Jesus Sanchez opened the inning with a single off San Francisco starter Logan Webb (11-9).

After Sanchez stole second, Bride doubled to center field to make it 5-5, then scampered home two batters later on Otto Lopez’s infield out for the eventual game-winning run.

Completing a 4-3 trip to Colorado and San Francisco, the Marlins added an insurance run in the seventh when Nick Fortes singled and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Sanchez.

Xzavion Curry, Mike Baumann, John McMillon and Calvin Faucher took it from there, preventing even a single Giants baserunner over the final 12 outs of the game. Curry (1-2) was credited with the win, while Faucher, who struck out all three men he faced in the ninth, registered his sixth save.

Mike Yastrzemski hit Marlins starter Darren McCaughan’s second pitch of the game for his 12th home run.

In the Giants’ three-run fifth, Mark Canha had the big hit, an RBI single that also advanced Michael Conforto to third, from where he temporarily put San Francisco on top on a sacrifice fly by Jerar Encarnacion.

Webb allowed six runs and eight hits in six innings. He struck out four, walked none and served up Stowers’ third homer of the season, which came in a four-run fifth.

McCaughan was pulled after four-plus innings, and he charged with four runs (three earned) and five hits. He walked one and struck out two.

Fortes had three hits and scored twice, while Griffin Conine added a pair of singles for the Marlins, who out-hit the Giants 10-6.

Yastrzemski and Conforto each scored twice and Tyler Fitzgerald collected a pair of singles for the Giants, who won the series opener 3-1 before losing the two weekend games by a total of three runs.
