Diamondbacks use big 2nd inning to rout Dodgers

Diamondbacks

Randal Grichuk hit a three-run homer to cap an eight-run second inning, and the Arizona Diamondbacks pummeled the Los Angeles Dodgers 14-3 on Sunday afternoon in Phoenix.

Eugenio Suarez also homered and had two RBIs for Arizona (77-60), which pounded out 17 hits and ended a three-game losing streak. Grichuk had three hits and four RBIs.

Brandon Pfaadt (9-7) allowed three runs on eight hits over 5 2/3 innings. He walked two and struck out 10.

Los Angeles (82-55) had its four-game win streak snapped. Manager Dave Roberts removed Freddie Freeman, Mookie Betts and Teoscar Hernandez from the game with the Dodgers trailing 8-0 entering the bottom of the third inning.

Arizona sent 11 batters to the plate and recorded seven hits in the second inning against Dodgers starter Justin Wrobleski (1-2), who was making his sixth career start.

Grichuk doubled to begin the inning and scored on Suarez’s one-out single. Kevin Newman followed with a single and moved to second on Jose Herrera’s run-scoring single.

Gerardo Perdomo doubled in two runs and Josh Bell delivered an RBI single with two outs before Grichuk capped the outburst with a three-run homer. The 427-foot blast was Grichuk’s sixth homer this season and second in three games.

Wrobleski returned for the third inning and was greeted by Suarez’s leadoff homer. Suarez deposited a 2-2 fastball over the center-field wall for his 22nd homer this season.

Wrobleski yielded 10 runs on 10 hits over 5 1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out two.

Los Angeles got on the board in the fourth inning on Tommy Edman’s groundout, which scored Chris Taylor.

Los Angeles ended Pfaadt’s afternoon with two runs in the sixth inning. After Gavin Lux scored on Kevin Kiermaier’s groundout, Austin Barnes singled in a run with two outs to make it 9-3.

Pfaadt was replaced by Joe Mantiply to face Shohei Ohtani, who was called out on strikes.

Corbin Carroll delivered a run-scoring single in the sixth inning against Wrobleski, and Arizona added two runs in the seventh inning.

The Diamondbacks scored two runs on four hits in the eighth inning against position pitcher Enrique Hernandez.
