Marlins outslug Phillies to end their winning streak

Phillies, Marlins

Rookie Connor Norby homered and drove in three runs as the host Miami Marlins snapped Philadelphia’s six-game win streak with a 9-5 victory over the Phillies on Saturday night.

The Phillies, who lead the NL East with an 85-57 record, got a good performance from Bryson Stott, who went 3-for-4 with one RBI.

Miami (53-89) has one of the three-worst records in the major leagues.

However, the Marlins had six of their nine starters turn in multi-hit games, including Xavier Edwards, who also had two steals, and Jonah Bride and Otto Lopez, who each homered.

Phillies starter Aaron Nola (12-7) lasted 4 2/3 innings, allowing nine hits, two walks, five runs, four earned. It was his shortest stint since June 13.

The win went to reliever John McMillon (2-1).

Philadelphia opened the scoring in the first inning as Kyle Schwarber doubled and scored on Nick Castellanos’ two-out single. Stott then singled, with Castellanos advancing to third.

However, Miami escaped further damage as catcher Nick Fortes — with the help of a great tag by shortstop Edwards — caught Stott trying to steal second.

Edwards led off the bottom of the first with a single, and he scored on Norby’s 435-foot blast to right-center.

Philadelphia tied it up 2-2 in the third on Schwarber’s sacrifice fly.

Miami surged back on top 3-2 in the bottom of the third as Jesus Sanchez singled, stole second and scored on Bride’s two-out infield single coupled with third baseman Kody Clemens’ throwing error to first.

The Marlins made it 4-2 in the fourth on Norby’s two-out single to left. The Marlins had three singles and one walk in the inning, stranding the bases loaded.

In the fifth, Johan Rojas came within a foot of a homer to center. He settled for a triple off the wall, and he scored on Garrett Stubbs’ single to cut Philadelphia’s deficit to 4-3.

But Bride homered in the bottom of the fifth to restore Miami’s two-run edge at 5-3.

Miami stretched its lead to 6-3 in the sixth as Edwards singled, stole second, swiped third and scored on Sanchez’s 94-mph single that handcuffed shortstop Trea Turner.

The Marlins made it 9-3 in the seventh. First, Lopez slugged a 427-foot homer to center. Javier Sanoja then picked up an RBI groundout in his first MLB at-bat, and the Marlins made it 9-3 on Turner’s throwing error.

Philadelphia cut its deficit to 9-5 in the eighth, getting an RBI double from Stott and a run-scoring single by Brandon Marsh.
