The Philadelphia Phillies placed shortstop Edmundo Sosa on the injured list Sunday with back spasms, while right-hander Seth Johnson was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Sosa, 28, was batting .264 with seven home runs and a career high-tying 30 RBIs in 83 games this season, as well as delivering high-level defense at multiple infield positions. In 389 career games over nine seasons for the St. Louis Cardinals (2018-22) and Phillies, he is a .255 hitter with 25 home runs and 108 RBIs.
Johnson, 25, is set to make his major league debut after five minor league seasons. He was acquired from the Baltimore Orioles for left-hander Gregory Soto just before the July trade deadline.
Johnson was a combined 2-7 with a 2.33 ERA in 23 starts for three different minor league teams this season.
