Britain’s Emma Raducanu recorded a 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5) win over Peyton Stearns in the first round of the Korea Open on Tuesday in Seoul.
Raducanu, who was playing for the first time since losing in the first round of the U.S. Open, opened a 4-1 lead in the first set before ending the session in 74 minutes. The 2021 U.S. Open champion needed 89 minutes to dispatch Stearns in the second set to secure a second-round match with China’s Yuan Yue.
Australian Ajla Tomljanovic overcame 16 double faults to notch a 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-3 victory over South Korean Su Jeong Jang and Amanda Anisova ousted No. 6 seed Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan 6-3, 7-6 (5). Also advancing were Hailey Baptiste, Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova and Bulgaria’s Viktoriya Tomova.
Thailand Open
Third-seeded Xinyu Wang of China breezed to a 6-2, 6-4 win over Egypt’s Mayar Sherif in first-round action in Hua Hin, Thailand.
Xinyu won 68.6 percent of her first serves and saved five of six break points to dispatch Sherif in two hours and set up a match against Spaniard Rebeka Masarova in the next round.
Japan’s Mai Hontama upset top-seeded Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine 7-6 (4), 7-5 and No. 4 seed Magda Linette of Poland notched a 6-2, 7-5 win over Lesia Tsurenko of the Ukraine. Other winners included Arianne Hartono of the Netherlands and Jana Fett of Croatia.
