Claude Teuchert and Marcel Hertel scored first-half goals and St. Louis City notched its first road win of the season with a 2-1 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday night.
Roman Burki made four saves as St. Louis City improved to 1-6-8 on the road. St. Louis City has won all four meetings with the Earthquakes during their two MLS seasons.
Jeremy Ebobisse scored the lone goal for the MLS-worst Earthquakes (5-22-3, 18 points).
St. Louis City (6-11-13, 31 points) is 2-1-2 over their last five matches but remain 11 points behind the Minnesota United for the final Western Conference playoff spot.
San Jose outshot St. Louis 16-7 and had a 5-2 edge in shots on target.
St. Louis City started fast with two goals in the first 13 minutes.
Teuchert got things going in the fourth minute when he sent a right-footed shot into the right corner of the net. He has four goals in six MLS matches since becoming eligible to play for the club in mid-July.
A short time later, San Jose’s Rodrigues was called for a foul in the box to prompt a penalty kick and the call stood after a video review.
Hertel stood at the spot in the 13th minute, then crept forward and did a stutter step to freeze San Jose goalkeeper William Yarbrough and easily slid a right-footed shot into the lower left corner to make it 2-0. It was his second goal in five MLS matches since joining St. Louis in July.
San Jose got on the board in the 40th minute as Carlos Akapo fed Ebobisse, who sent a left-footed shot into the net. It was his fifth goal of the season.
Cristian Espinoza of the Earthquakes had a chance to knot the score in the 76th minute but his left-footed blast was directly at Burki.
Jackson Yueill’s cross in the 90th minute went into the box in front of the net before being knocked away by Burki. San Jose did not threaten during the three minutes of second-half stoppage time.
