Tigers fall to White Sox, face Astros in AL wild-card series

White Sox, Tigers

Lenyn Sosa hit a three-run homer and the visiting Chicago White Sox closed out their season with a 9-5 win over the playoff-bound Detroit Tigers on Sunday.

Sosa had three hits and scored three runs and Bryan Ramos supplied two hits, two runs scored and two RBIs for the White Sox (41-121), who won five of their last six games.

Jonathan Cannon (5-10) gave up four runs in five innings, with three strikeouts and three walks, and collected the victory. Enyel De Los Santos recorded his second save.

Kerry Carpenter blasted a grand slam for the Tigers (86-76), who clinched an American League wild-card playoff berth with a 4-1 victory over the White Sox on Friday. Detroit will travel to Houston to face the AL West champion Astros in the playoff opener on Tuesday.

Detroit starter Kenda Maeda (3-7) gave up five runs and five hits in 4 2/3 innings. He walked one and struck out five.

The White Sox strung together three singles while scoring two second-inning runs. Sosa, Ramos and Korey Lee had one-out base hits, with Lee’s single scoring Sosa. Dominic Fletcher’s sacrifice fly knocked in Ramos.

Chicago made it 5-0 in the third. Miguel Vargas led off with a walk and advanced on Zach DeLoach’s single. With two outs, Sosa launched his eighth homer over the left-center-field wall. Detroit had two singles in the bottom of the inning but Cannon got out of that jam as Carpenter flied out.

The Tigers came roaring back in the fifth. Spencer Torkelson, Trey Sweeney and Parker Meadows drew walks to load the bases. Carpenter then launched his two-out grand slam over the right-center field wall to make it 5-4.

The White Sox had a threat in the sixth but Lee was thrown out at home on a fielder’s choice.

Chicago extended its lead to 9-4 in the seventh. It loaded the bases on a Luis Robert Jr. single and walks to DeLoach and Sosa. Ramos then smacked a single to right, bringing home two runs. An error by third baseman Matt Vierling allowed Sosa to score, and Jacob Amaya’s single scored Ramos.

Torkelson’s bases-loaded walk in the eighth cut Chicago’s lead to four runs.
