Artemi Panarin sizzling as hat trick leads Rangers past Red Wings

Rangers, Red Wings

Artemi Panarin continued his torrid start by recording a hat trick as part of a four-point showing as the visiting New York Rangers rolled to a 5-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night.

Panarin scored two goals in the first period and added his second power-play goal of the game in the second period, giving him five goals in New York’s first four games. After recording a career-high 120 points last season and finishing three shy of Jaromir Jagr’s team record, Panarin has 11 points in the early going.

Panarin recorded his eighth career hat trick and also became the first player in team history with four straight multi-point games to start a season. Panarin registered his fifth hat trick since joining the Rangers in free agency in July 2019 and recorded New York’s first hat trick against the Red Wings since Darren Turcotte on March 30, 1991.

Vincent Trocheck set up all of Panarin’s goals and also scored the second of New York’s three power-play goals. Rookie Victor Mancini scored his first career goal and Adam Fox collected three assists for the Rangers, who are off to a 3-0-1 start and have scored 20 goals so far.

New York backup goalie Jonathan Quick made 29 saves in his season debut and earned his 394th career win.

Moritz Seider and J.T. Compher scored for the Red Wings, who lost for the third time in four games to begin the season and have allowed 15 goals in their losses.

Detroit’s Cam Talbot allowed five goals on 19 shots before being lifted following Panarin’s third goal. Alex Lyon finished with 15 saves.

Panarin started his big night 8:30 into the contest when he got a long cross-ice pass from Trocheck and sent a shot from the right circle over Talbot as defenseman Ben Chiarot was slow to defend.

Panarin scored nine seconds into New York’s first power play with 4:21 left in the first by blasting a shot from the left circle over Talbot’s right arm shortly after Trocheck won an offensive zone faceoff against Dylan Larkin.

After Seider scored 87 seconds into the second, Trocheck and Panarin scored on successive power plays in a span of 2:56. Trocheck made it 3-1 by re-directing a shot from Panarin by Talbot. Panarin scored again when he walked into the right circle and sent the puck into the vacated right side of the net.
