Big third period lifts Red Wings past Predators

Red Wings, Predators

Andrew Copp scored twice, including the go-ahead goal early in the third period, as the visiting Detroit Red Wings topped winless Nashville 5-2 on Saturday afternoon.

Vladimir Tarasenko, Dylan Larkin and Simon Edvinsson also scored for the Red Wings, while Alex Lyon made 37 saves.

Steven Stamkos scored his first goal for Nashville after signing as a free agent during the offseason. Luke Schenn had the other goal, while Juuse Saros made 19 saves.

Schenn, playing in his 1,001st career game, scored the first goal at 8:48 of the first period. He took a shot from the right point that sailed through traffic and snuck inside the post. Ryan O’Reilly and Gustav Nyquist had the assists.

Nashville appeared to take a 2-0 lead moments later on a Colton Sissons’ backhander. Detroit challenged the play, claiming the Predators were offside, and the officials concurred after replay reviews.

Tarasenko tied it with his second goal of the season. Jonatan Berggren fed him the puck from behind the Nashville net. Marco Kasper, called up from the American Hockey League’s Grand Rapids Griffins, was credited for the second assist and his first career point.

With Marc Del Gaizo in the penalty box for hooking, the Red Wings scored a power-play goal to take the lead early in the second. Patrick Kane fired a pass to Alex DeBrincat, whose shot was stopped by Saros. DeBrincat collected the rebound and passed to Larkin, who scored his third goal.

The Predators’ Roman Josi nearly scored a short-handed goal late in the period, as his slapshot banged off the crossbar.

Nashville had a 5-on-3 spanning the second and third periods. Stamkos scored 32 seconds into the period to tie it at 2-all. Jonathan Marchessault hit the post but seconds later, Filip Forsberg passed to Stamkos, who one-timed from the left circle.

Detroit regained the lead at 3:29. Joe Veleno shoveled the puck toward the net and it bounced off Copp’s skate and through Saros’ legs.

Empty-netters from Edvinsson and Copp clinched Detroit’s win.
