clemson

Ian Schieffelin recorded 16 points, 13 rebounds and four assists, helping lead the Clemson Tigers to an 88-62 win over visiting Saint Francis on Friday.

Jaeden Zackery also scored 16 points and Chase Hunter added 13 for Clemson (2-0). The Tigers made 33 of their 56 field-goal attempts (58.9 percent) and held Saint Francis to just 39.3 percent from the field. Chauncey Wiggins added 11 points in the win.

Ace Talbert led the Red Flash (0-2) with 17 points, and Jeremy Clayville added 11 points off the bench. Bobby Rosenberger III chipped in 10 points in the loss.

Hunter scored the game’s first six points, and back-to-back field goals by Zackery and Viktor Lakhin extended the Tigers’ lead to 10-2 at the 17:37 mark of the first half.

After Clayville’s 3-pointer cut Clemson’s lead to 14-10, Del Jones scored on consecutive possessions for the Tigers and Hunter’s triple capped a 7-0 run to give the Tigers a 21-10 cushion.

With 7:06 left in the first half, Zackery’s three-point play extended Clemson’s advantage to 27-12. Rosenberger answered with a 3-pointer for Saint Francis, but Jake Heidbreder knocked down a 3-pointer, and Schieffelin hit back-to-back layups, giving Clemson a 34-15 lead with 3:33 left.

Leading 37-20, Zackery and Lakhin each made layups in the final minute of the first half, giving Clemson a 41-20 halftime lead. Hunter paced the Tigers with nine points in the first half, while Rosenberger led the Red Flash with six.

From there, Clemson took a 29-point lead — its largest to that point — after Wiggins’ mid-range jumper extended the Tigers’ lead to 53-24 with 16:09 left in the second half.

Saint Francis cut into its deficit with a 12-0 run, trimming Clemson’s lead to 53-36 with 13:11 left.

Clayville hit a layup with 9:53 left and Tolbert knocked down a triple to cut the Red Flash’s deficit to 58-44. Schieffelin, Zackery, Heidbreder and Dillon Hunter then each connected on 3-pointers, extending the Tigers’ lead to 70-44 with 5:39 remaining.
