Kraken ride 4-goal second period to win over Blue Jackets

Kraken, Blue Jackets

Fourth-liners Tye Kartye and Brandon Tanev sparked a comeback as the Seattle Kraken rallied from a two-goal deficit to defeat the visiting Columbus Blue Jackets 5-2 Tuesday night.

Kartye, Tanev, Eeli Tolvanen and Will Borgen scored second-period goals and Jared McCann added a late empty-netter as the Kraken improved to 2-0-0 on their six-game homestand. Jordan Eberle logged two assists, and McCann also finished with two points.

Seattle goaltender Joey Daccord made 38 saves.

Sean Kuraly and Zach Aston-Reese each produced a goal and an assist for the Blue Jackets, whose losing streak reached six games (0-5-1). Kevin Labanc assists on both tallies, and Elvis Merzlikins stopped 28 of 32 shots.

The Kraken outshot Columbus 20-8 in the second period while taking control.

Kartye got the Kraken on the board at 2:50 of the period, taking a pass from Andre Burakovsky with his back to the net at the top of the crease and putting a spinning backhander between Merzlikins’ pads.

Tanev tied the score at 7:13 on a two-on-one rush with Yanni Gourde. Tanev sped down the right wing, cut laterally through the slot and beat Merzlikins with a wrist shot.

The Kraken took the lead on Tolvanen’s power-play goal just 10 seconds later, after Labanc was sent to the penalty box for roughing.

Seattle’s Jared McCann won a faceoff in the offensive zone and got the puck to Eberle along the goal line on the left wing. Eberle fired a pass across the top of the crease, and Tolvanen tipped it in near the far post. The assist gave McCann 200 career points with the Kraken, making him the first to reach that mark with the franchise.

Borgen, a defenseman, made it 4-2 at 13:34, converting a wrist shot from the high slot on an odd-man rush for his first goal of the season.

The Blue Jackets outshot Seattle 18-6 in the first period while taking a 2-0 lead.

Columbus opened the scoring at 13:46 of the period as Aston-Reese’s shot from the top of the left faceoff circle deflected off Eberle’s stick and hit Kuraly, stationed at the top of the crease, in the back of the left leg. The puck dropped into the blue paint, and Kuraly tapped it in before Daccord could locate it.

The Blue Jackets doubled their advantage just 22 seconds later. Kuraly went into the right corner and took a hit from defenseman Joshua Mahura. While falling to ice, Kuraly slung the puck toward the net, and Aston-Reese redirected it over Daccord’s left shoulder.
