Packers block last-second FG to beat Bears for 11th straight time

packers

Jordan Love passed and ran for a touchdown, Karl Brooks blocked a field goal as time expired and the visiting Green Bay Packers edged the skidding Chicago Bears 20-19 on Sunday.

Love scored the go-ahead TD on a 1-yard run with 2:59 to go. Rookie counterpart Caleb Williams drove the Bears downfield on the next possession, positioning them for a would-be game-winning 46-yard field goal. But Brooks blocked Cairo Santos’ kick to help Green Bay (7-3) preserve the victory.

Love went 13-for-17 for 261 yards with a touchdown and interception. Josh Jacobs had 134 yards of offense and a rushing touchdown, and Christian Watson had a career-high 150 yards on four catches, including a 60-yard reception on the go-ahead TD drive.

Williams was 23-for-31 passing for 231 yards and added 70 yards on nine carries as Chicago (4-6) lost its fourth in a row overall and 11th straight in the series.

The Packers took a 14-13 lead on Jacobs’ 7-yard touchdown run with 6:34 remaining in the third quarter, but the advantage was short-lived.

D’Andre Swift (14 carries, 71 yards) scored from 39 yards out with 31 seconds left in the quarter to put the Bears back in front.

Aided by a 48-yard connection from Love to Watson, the Packers threatened to score on the ensuing possession. But Green Bay turned the ball over on downs when Love was stopped at the Bears’ 1 on fourth-and-goal from the 6.

Green Bay took the opening kickoff and drove 70 yards in eight plays, punctuating the possession with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Love to Jayden Reed.

With new offensive coordinator Thomas Brown at the helm of the attack, the Bears responded with a 53-yard field goal from Santos.

Chicago punted on its next drive but regrouped after getting the ball back, visiting the end zone for the first time in 25 possessions on Roschon Johnson’s 1-yard scoring run.

Johnson’s touchdown followed an interception by the Bears’ Terell Smith.

Santos made a 27-yard field goal on the first possession of the third quarter to make it 13-7 Chicago.

Green Bay cornerback Jaire Alexander, who was questionable with a knee injury, played early in the game but did not return after apparently aggravating the injury.

Bears left guard Ryan Bates did not return after sustaining a concussion in the first quarter.
