Great Britain’s Emma Raducanu and Katie Boulter defeated Canada’s Rebecca Marino and Leylah Fernandez, respectively, on Sunday to advance to the semifinals of the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Malaga, Spain.
Raducanu won 6-0, 7-5 to lead things off before Boulter followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win to oust the defending champion Canadians. Raducanu won 44 percent (4 of 9) of her return games. Boulter controlled her match against Fernandez with 21 winners, seven of them aces.
Great Britain has never won this event, last advancing to the finals in 1981.
Slovakia, which won in 2002, awaits Great Britain after a hard-fought elimination of Australia. Viktoria Hruncakova eventually took down Kimberly Birrell 7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-3, while teammate Rebecca Sramkova defeated Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic 6-1, 6-2.
Italy will face Poland in the other semifinal on Monday.
