Women’s Top 25 roundup: No. 19 Tennessee overpowers NC Central

Samara Spencer finished with a career-high 33 points and added 10 assists and three steals, and five teammates also scored in double figures as No. 19 Tennessee humiliated North Carolina Central 139-59 on Saturday in Knoxville, Tenn.

Talaysia Cooper supplied 21 points, seven assists, six rebounds and five steals in 18 minutes for the Lady Volunteers (8-0), who entered the nonconference matchup third in Division I in scoring at 92.6 points per game. Tess Darby chipped in 17 points, Zee Spearman had 15, Ruby Whitehorn 13 and Sara Puckett 11.

Freshman Shakiria Foster led North Carolina Central (0-12) with 17 points, and Terriana Gray added 10, but she also was responsible for 12 of the Eagles’ 44 turnovers.

The Lady Volunteers scored the game’s first 20 points, led 33-10 after the first quarter and 69-18 at halftime. The lead reached 84 points late in the fourth.

No. 11 Ohio State 87, Youngstown State 39

Cotie McMahon scored a season-high 29 points, including 16 in the first quarter, as the undefeated Buckeyes routed the Penguins in the nonconference mismatch in Columbus, Ohio.

Ajae Petty added 19 points and 12 rebounds, Chance Gray supplied 12 points and Taylor Thierry had nine points, seven rebounds and seven steals for Ohio State (10-0), which entered the day averaging 87.4 points per game, 10th in Division I.

The Buckeyes jumped to a 16-3 lead in the game’s first five-plus minutes, with McMahon scoring 11 points. Ohio State led 23-14 after one quarter, and made it a blowout by holding Youngstown State (6-5) to four points in the second quarter.

Malia Magestro scored eight points and Faith Burch had seven points and eight rebounds for the Penguins, who had 34 turnovers, 11 in the first quarter.

No. 20 Michigan 100, Detroit Mercy 54

Olivia Olson finished with 22 points and four steals in 20 minutes as the Wolverines blew out the Titans in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Te’Yala Delfosse scored 13 points and Macy Brown and Brooke Q. Daniels netted 11 apiece as Michigan (9-1) won its ninth straight game since losing to then-No. 1 South Carolina to open the season.

Aaliyah McQueen paced Detroit Mercy (6-2) with 15 points, and Emaia O’Brien added 11, but they combined to shoot just 7 of 22 from the floor. The Titans shot 31.4 percent overall while the Wolverines finished at 54.7 percent.

Michigan jumped to a 12-3 lead about five minutes into the game. After O’Brien’s 3-pointer trimmed the lead to eight points, the Wolverines put together a 10-0 run and led by 18 at the end of the period. They padded the cushion to 32 at halftime.
