Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid, who suffered a sinus fracture last Friday, will be re-evaluated in one week, the team said Monday.
Already ruled out for Monday night’s game at the Charlotte Hornets, Embiid will miss Friday’s home game against Charlotte, Saturday’s visit to the NBA-best Cleveland Cavaliers and likely the Dec. 23 game against Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs.
Late in the first half of Philadelphia’s 121-107 home loss to the Indiana Pacers on Friday, Embiid took an errant blow from Bennedict Mathurin to the right side of his face. He crumpled to the ground and team trainers attended to him.
Embiid, 30, missed the second half as the 76ers fell to 7-16 on the season. He finished with 12 points, five assists and four rebounds in 17 minutes.
The 2022-23 NBA Most Valuable Player has played just six games after missing the start of the season due to knee soreness and a suspension for shoving a reporter in the team’s locker room. He missed seven games in a row while managing swelling in his left knee and had just returned to the lineup on Dec. 8.
Embiid is averaging 20.3 points, 7.7 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game this season, far off his career averages of 27.8 points and 11.1 rebounds.
Making matters worse for the Sixers, rookie guard Jared McCain suffered a torn meniscus is out indefinitely following surgery. At 15.3 points per game, the first-round draft pick had the highest scoring average of anyone on the team who had played in at least 20 games.
