Blackhawks rally from 2-0 hole in 3rd to top Caps

Capitals, Blackhawks

Ryan Donato scored the go-ahead goal with 2:18 remaining as the host Chicago Blackhawks rallied for a 3-2 win against the Washington Capitals on Tuesday.

Ilya Mikheyev had a goal and assist and Teuvo Teravainen tallied an assist on every goal for Chicago. TJ Brodie also scored for the Blackhawks, who entered the final period in a 2-0 deficit.

Washington fell to 12-1-1 when leading after two periods while losing on the road for the second time in as many nights after a franchise-record 10-game road winning streak.

Donato capped the comeback by driving from below the goal line to stuff a shot past Capitals goaltender Logan Thompson.

Thompson and Blackhawks goalie Arvid Soderblom both made 20 saves.

Despite being outshot 9-5 in the first 20 minutes, Washington made the most of its limited early scoring chances.

Pierre-Luc Dubois opened the scoring at 4:16 of the period with a goal that Andrew Mangiapane mimicked about nine minutes later. Given one-on-one opportunities against Blackhawks defensemen, the Capitals used strong moves to shake pressure and score.

Dubois capitalized on a poor handle by Chicago’s Louis Crevier, slipping a shot under the five-hole of Soderblom after deking his way through contact.

Mangiapane darted to the right wing after taking a pass from Lars Eller in the neutral zone. He put a curl-and-drag move on Brodie on his way to the net, then darted to the far side before wristing a shot past Soderblom.

The Blackhawks drew within 2-1 just 51 seconds into the third period on Mikheyev’s short-handed goal.

Brodie rebounded from his miscue with the tying goal with 5:53 remaining, on a wrist shot from the top of the right circle.

Chicago was unable to cash in on a series of favorable special-teams opportunities earlier in the game. The Blackhawks finished 0-for-4 on the power play, including on consecutive too-many-men penalties against Washington in the second period.

Chicago stretched its penalty-kill streak to 27 after limiting Washington to 0-for-3 on the power play.
