Patrick Kane pots OT winner, Red Wings top Senators

patrick kane

Patrick Kane scored an overtime goal with 2:39 left as the Detroit Red Wings won their fifth straight game by defeating the road-weary Ottawa Senators 3-2 on Tuesday night.

Dylan Larkin won a faceoff in Detroit’s offensive zone and passed it behind him to Kane, who easily snapped the game-winner past Anton Forsberg. It came on a power play, as Jake Sanderson was penalized 11 seconds earlier for hooking Moritz Seider.

Larkin also scored a power-play goal in the first period, extending his goal streak to four games and his point streak to six games. Joe Veleno had the other regulation goal for Detroit.

Alex Lyon started in goal for Detroit but suffered an upper-body injury during the first period. Cam Talbot replaced him, and they combined for 31 saves.

Thomas Chabot and Brady Tkachuk scored in regulation for Ottawa. Forsberg made 30 saves.

The Senators have lost five of their last six (1-4-1). Ottawa wrapped up its nine-game road trip, the longest in franchise history.

The Red Wings scored on a power play at 8:30 of the first. With Tkachuk in the penalty box for removing Simon Edvinsson’s helmet, Larkin scored in front off nifty feeds from Alex DeBrincat and Lucas Raymond.

The Red Wings outshot the Senators 14-10 in the first period but neither side allowed another goal.

The Senators were awarded their first power play midway through the second period when Edvinsson was whistled for tripping. Just after the penalty expired, Chabot lifted a shot from the right side that flew past Talbot’s right shoulder.

Ottawa converted on its second power play with 54.7 seconds left in the period. With Justin Holl in the penalty box for roughing, Tkachuk flicked a shot from the left side that beat Talbot on the top shelf.

Veleno tied it 2-2 five minutes into the third when he fluttered a shot from the slot past Forsberg while falling backward.

This was the second of four meetings between the Senators and Red Wings. Ottawa won the first matchup, 2-1, on Dec. 5.
