Chase Ross fires up No. 7 Marquette for win over Georgetown

georgetown

Chase Ross scored a career-high 27 points to go along with six steals, lifting No. 7 Marquette to a 74-66 victory over Georgetown on Tuesday night in Milwaukee.

Ross made 7 of 12 shots from the floor — and 4 of 6 from 3-point range — to eclipse his previous career-high point total of 23, set in a 102-62 win over Stony Brook on Nov. 4.

Stevie Mitchell scored 13 points, David Joplin had 12 and Kam Jones added 11 for the Golden Eagles (14-2, 5-0 Big East), who have won five games in a row overall and all 10 at home this season.

Georgetown’s Malik Mack scored 18 points, and Big East Freshman of the Week Thomas Sorber collected 11 points, 13 rebounds and a season-high five blocks.

Micah Peavy had 13 points for the Hoyas (12-3, 3-1), who saw their five-game winning streak come to a halt despite holding a 38-32 edge in rebounds.

Drew Fielder, who had made just 4 of 23 attempts from 3-point range entering Tuesday, converted from beyond the arc to give Georgetown a 63-62 lead with 3:13 remaining in the second half.

Joplin sank a pair of free throws with 2:19 left to give the advantage back to Marquette. Peavy split a pair of attempts from the charity stripe before Mitchell made a driving layup on the next possession.

Ross sank a pair of free throws with 46 seconds left to extend the Golden Eagles’ lead to 68-64. Joplin essentially sealed the win with a pair of free throws with 30 seconds to go.

Marquette bolted out of the blocks and captured a 15-8 lead following 3-pointers by Tre Norman and Jones.

Georgetown countered with a 27-6 run, capped by Jordan Burks’ tip shot with 4:49 remaining in the first half.

The Golden Eagles, however, slowly chipped away and pulled within nine, 38-29, following a 3-pointer from Joplin 40 seconds before intermission.
