The New York Jets completed a head coaching interview with Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, the team announced Wednesday.
Because Nagy is still working as OC while the Chiefs have a bye for the wild-card round of the playoffs, his interview had to be limited to three hours and take place between Wednesday and the end of wild-card weekend, according to league rules.
Nagy has been the Chiefs’ OC for the past two seasons and had a two-year stint in the same position from 2016-17. In between, he compiled a 34-31 record as the head coach of the Chicago Bears, making the playoffs twice in four seasons.
Nagy is the fourth candidate to interview for the vacancy left after a season that saw the Jets (5-12) fire head coach Robert Saleh after a 2-3 start and go 3-9 under interim coach Jeff Ulbrich.
The Jets interviewed their own former head coach, Rex Ryan, on Tuesday. Ryan, 62, had a 46-50 record at the helm of the Jets from 2009-14 and went 15-16 with the Buffalo Bills from 2015-16.
He has served as a TV analyst since being fired by the Bills with one game left in 2016.
New York also interviewed Ron Rivera, 63, who spent this season as a television analyst after serving as an NFL head coach for the previous 13 seasons. Rivera coached the Carolina Panthers to a 15-1 season and a Super Bowl appearance in 2015 during his 2011-19 tenure and coached the Washington Football Team/Commanders to a 26-40-1 record from 2020-23.
The Jets interviewed former Tennessee Titans coach and longtime Patriots player Mike Vrabel, 49, on Friday. Vrabel was a coaching and personnel consultant for the Cleveland Browns in the 2024 season, but his contract expired Dec. 30, allowing him to interview with other NFL teams.
New York is also requesting an interview with Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, according to NFL Network.
Spagnuolo, 65, had two stints as defensive coordinator for the New York Giants, including during the Giants’ 17-14 upset win over the undefeated New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII. He went 10-38 over three seasons as Rams head coach and spent four games as the Giants’ interim head coach after Ben McAdoo was fired in 2017.
