Matt Coronato tallied a goal and an assist while goaltender Dustin Wolf delivered a sparkling performance to give the host Calgary Flames a 2-1 comeback victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday.
Jonathan Huberdeau also scored for Calgary, which has won two consecutive games. Wolf made 31 saves, 16 of them in the first period while his team appeared overmatched from the drop of the puck.
For good measure, Wolf provided a couple of late clutch stops on Phillip Danault, the first on a deflected point shot and the second a sprawling stop on the rebound attempt with the game on the line.
Jacob Moverare scored the lone goal for the Kings, who saw their five-game winning streak end. Goalie David Rittich stopped 16 shots.
The Kings rocketed out of the gates and opened the scoring when Moverare converted with his team’s 13th shot at just the 6:19 mark of the affair. The Flames failed a couple of times to clear the puck and the defenseman found the mark with a long point shot for his second career goal and first since last March to snap a 34-game drought.
Despite his team being grossly outplayed from the drop of the puck, Coronato drew the Flames even at 8:58 of the second period with his 10th goal of the season. Mikael Backlund forced a turnover that resulted in Coronato gaining the puck near the left faceoff dot before wiring a top-corner shot.
Huberdeau’s power-play goal put the Flames ahead for the first time at 4:36 of the third period. Coronato’s slot shot was denied, but Huberdeau pounced on the rebound.
A tripping penalty on Kings defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov with 1:48 remaining in regulation put a crimp in his team’s late push for the equalizer, preventing them from carrying momentum with the final buzzer looming.
