Lindsey Vonn continues comeback with fourth-place finish in Austria

lindsey vonn

Lindsey Vonn continued her comeback Sunday with a fourth-place finish in what turned out to be a splendid super-G race for the Americans in St. Anton, Austria.

Vonn was sixth in her specialty — downhill — on Saturday, and with her super-G finish, the 40-year-old became the oldest woman to finish in the top four in a World Cup event, The Athletic reported. And Lauren Macuga, 22, won the race, making her the first American to win a super-G on the St. Anton mountain.

“I can’t believe it, this is so exciting!” Macuga said. “I don’t think anything has settled in. I am waiting for it to hit me. This is something I have been dreaming about forever.”

Vonn has seen the top of the World Cup podium plenty of times — 82, with 22 of them in super-G — but was excited herself.

“It was a crazy run today. It was really bumpy, it was sunny, then it got dark,” Vonn said. “But it was a really good step forward. This is something I am really proud of and I am also really proud of Lauren. It is really nice to be a part of such a fun team. It’s great to see another American on top of the podium.”

Vonn is seeking to make her fifth Olympic team and compete in the 2026 Winter Games in Italy, hosted by the cities of Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo.

Cortina will host the World Cup downhill and super-G next weekend.

“I think I’m in a good place. I really wanted to keep building every day on my results and I think it’s perfect timing coming into Cortina,” Vonn said. “I feel really confident. My equipment is getting better every day. I just have to get that last 10 or 15 percent that I know I can get to. I have a lot of confidence in Cortina so I hope I can put everything together there.”

Macuga won by 0.68 seconds over Stephanie Venier of Austria, with Italy’s Federica Brignone in third. Vonn finished 1.24 seconds behind Macuga.
