Red Wings’ hot power play overwhelms Panthers

red wings

Cam Talbot made 41 saves and the Detroit Red Wings scored three power-play goals in a 5-2 win over the Florida Panthers on Thursday night in Sunrise, Fla.

Detroit’s Jonatan Berggren, Dylan Larkin and Patrick Kane each had a goal with the man advantage. Marco Kasper also scored, and Larkin added an assist and later an empty-net tally. Lucas Raymond notched two assists, and Kane and Kasper also had two points apiece.

Talbot earned his fifth straight win as Detroit moved to 8-1-0 in its past nine games. During that span, the Red Wings have converted 16 of 31 power plays (47.1 percent).

The Red Wings registered at least one power-play goal in all eight of those victories, and in six of those contests, they had multiple power-play goals. In their past two wins, they totaled six goals with the man advantage.

During this nine-game hot streak, Larkin and Kane each have five power-play goals.

Meanwhile, Florida has allowed 12 power-play goals in its past 11 games.

On Thursday, Anton Lundell and Evan Rodrigues scored for the Panthers. However, goalie Sergei Bobrovsky (11 saves) was pulled in the second period after allowing four goals in his third straight start.

Spencer Knight took his place and saved all four shots he faced.

Berggren gave the Red Wings a 1-0 lead on a power play at 8:48 of the first period on a shot from the left circle.

Florida tied the score less than three minutes later after Carter Verhaeghe made a nice move to get the puck on net. Talbot made the stop, but Lundell poked in the rebound, beating defenseman Justin Holl to the spot.

The teams traded goals again in the first half of the second period.

Again on the power play, Detroit’s Alex DeBrincat made a great move to skate past Niko Mikkola. DeBrincat then shoveled the puck to Kane, who fed Larkin for a tap-in goal at 7:52.

Rodrigues tied the score just 29 seconds later as he got a high shot over Talbot’s blocker.

Detroit scored the final two goals of the second period, taking a 4-2 lead.

First, it was Kane on the power play as he ripped a shot just under the crossbar at 13:44. Florida defenseman Gustav Forsling was in the area but failed to stop Kane.

Then, with 4:19 left in the second, Detroit finally scored five-on-five. Larkin made a key play, beating Forsling to a loose puck in the neutral zone. Kasper did the rest, shooting between two defenders and sending Bobrovsky to the bench.

Larkin’s empty-netter clinched it with 1:22 left in the game.
