Dylan Larkin tallies two points as Red Wings handle Habs

Dylan Larkin notched a power-play goal and an assist in his 700th career game as the host Detroit Red Wings downed the Montreal Canadiens 4-2 on Thursday night.

Andrew Copp supplied a short-handed goal for the Red Wings, who ended a three-game losing streak (0-2-1). Detroit’s Jonatan Berggren and Alex DeBrincat also scored, Moritz Seider added two assists and Cam Talbot made 27 saves.

Kirby Dach had a goal and an assist for Montreal, which had gone 7-1-1 in its previous nine games. Kaiden Guhle had the other Canadiens goal.

Brendan Gallagher, playing in his 800th game, had an assist. Christian Dvorak and Patrik Laine, each appearing in his 500th game, also contributed an assist apiece. Montreal’s Sam Montembeault stopped 41 shots.

The Red Wings controlled the action in the first period and finally scored on their 12th shot on goal. Berggren flicked a shot from the right circle that snuck inside the far post with seven minutes remaining in the period. Larkin set it up by winning a puck battle along the boards.

Just after the Canadiens killed off a power play, the Wings made it 2-0 with four seconds left in the opening period. Lucas Raymond had the puck along the left side and Montembeault, anticipating a shot, went to his knees. Raymond instead advanced the puck to DeBrincat, who had open space behind Montembeault to notch his 20th goal. Seider had the secondary assist.

Copp made it 3-0 at 4:25 of the second period on his short-handed goal. The puck deflected off Detroit defenseman Simon Edvinsson’s skate and led to a breakaway for Copp, who beat Montembeault on the glove side.

Montreal quickly got that goal back on Dach’s wraparound just over a minute later. Dvorak and Gallagher had the assists.

Larkin scored on a power play at 7:50 of the second. He backhanded his own rebound for his 12th power-play goal of the season among his 21 tallies.

Guhle scored on a shot from the point at 11:06 of the middle period to pull the Canadiens within 4-2.

Detroit avenged two losses to the Canadiens last month. The teams conclude the season series April 8 in Montreal.
