Five-goal second period carries Hurricanes past Jackets

Seth Jarvis had two goals and sparked the Carolina Hurricanes’ big second period in a 7-4 victory against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday night in Raleigh, N.C.

Sebastian Aho and Jarvis both had a goal and two assists in the five-goal second. The Hurricanes, who’ve won four consecutive games, also received goals from Eric Robinson, Jackson Blake, Jordan Martinook and Jesperi Kotkaniemi. Martin Necas supplied two assists.

Carolina goalie Frederik Andersen, in his first home game since the season opener in October, stopped 18 shots. He also was credited with an assist on the tying goal. He improved his record to 5-1-0, including 2-0 in his return to action this month. It marked his 300th NHL victory.

Kent Johnson, Kirill Marchenko, James van Riemsdyk and Dmitri Voronkov scored for Columbus, which was 24 hours removed from winning at Toronto. Jack Johnson and Adam Fantilli each had two assists. Daniil Tarasov made 36 saves.

It’s the first time in eight games that the Blue Jackets allowed more than three goals.

The Hurricanes buzzed up and down the ice for a 24-3 second-period advantage in shots. Beginning with Jarvis’ first goal, they scored their five goals in an 8-minute, 46-second span.

Yet a 5-2 lead nearly vanished before the end of the second period.

In the first period, Johnson scored following a turnover by Blake, putting the puck between Andersen’s pads for his third goal in a five-game span.

Marchenko scored 2:40 later. It marked his ninth goal in 10 career games against the Hurricanes and fifth goal in three games this season vs. Carolina.

After Carolina’s big burst, van Riemsdyk and Voronkov scored less than three minutes apart to cut the margin to 5-4 with more than five minutes to play in the second period.

Jarvis has nine goals in the last 10 games.

Carolina exceeded the 40-shot level for the second time in three games.

Earlier in the day, Carolina defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere became a father and then played in the game.
