Stanford stops Syracuse, stays perfect at home in ACC

stanford syracuse basketball

Maxime Raynaud posted a game-high 21 points and a game-high 15 rebounds as Stanford held off visiting Syracuse for a 70-61 victory on Wednesday.

Jaylen Blakes added 14 points, Benny Gealer scored half of his 10 points in the stretch run, and Oziyah Sellers also had 10 for Stanford (15-6, 7-3 Atlantic Coast Conference). The Cardinal completed a 3-0 homestand while running their winning streak to four games.

Jaquan Carlos had a team-high 16 points off the bench and Eddie Lampkin Jr. scored 12 for Syracuse (9-12, 3-7). The Orange lost their third in a row as they opened a two-game California swing that continues Saturday at Cal.

Hosting Syracuse for the first time ever in basketball, Stanford never trailed, building as much as a 23-point lead before the Orange clawed back into contention.

A layup by J.J. Starling with 3:33 remaining in the contest had the visitors as close as 62-56. But Gealer then scored as many points as the Orange over the final 2:25, allowing the Cardinal to keep the unfamiliar opponent at arm’s length.

Raynaud recorded his 17th double-double of the season four days after he was held to eight points and 14 rebounds during a victory over Florida State.

The 20-point game was his 13th of the season on a night when he shot just 7-for-17 overall and 3-for-10 from beyond the arc. The All-America candidate also found time for three assists and three steals.

Playing its first basketball season in the ACC, Stanford remained unbeaten in five home conference games despite getting outshot 46.9 percent to 44.4 percent.

Half of Blakes’ 14 points came on eight free-throw attempts. The Cardinal enjoyed a 19-14 advantage in foul shots, making 15 while Syracuse converted just 9 of 14.

Carlos made all six of his shots, including two 3-point attempts. He also had four rebounds and a team-high three assists.

Lampkin was Syracuse’s leading rebounder with seven.
