Stars acquire Mikael Granlund, Cody Ceci from Sharks

Mikael Granlund

The Stars acquired forward Mikael Granlund and defenseman Cody Ceci from the San Jose Sharks on Saturday in exchange for Dallas’ first-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft and a conditional third-round selection in 2025.

The Sharks will receive the Stars’ third-round selection in 2025 if Dallas advances to the Stanley Cup Final. If the Stars do not reach the Stanley Cup Final, San Jose will receive a fourth-round selection instead.

“We are excited to welcome both Mikael and Cody to Dallas,” Stars general manager Jim Nill said. “We see both players as addressing immediate needs for our team — Mikael is a proven scorer who will bolster our forward group at both even strength and on the power play, and Cody will add a stabilizing and physical presence to our blueline.

“Both players will bring valuable postseason experience to our group, and we are looking forward to seeing their contributions to the Stars as the season continues.”

Both players are in the final year of their contracts and can become unrestricted free agents at the end of the season.

With the trade, the Sharks now have eight picks in the 2025 draft, including two in the first round.

Granlund, 32, led the Sharks with 30 assists and 45 points in 52 games this season.

Granlund has totaled 589 points (172 goals, 417 assists) in 871 career games with the Minnesota Wild, Nashville Predators, Pittsburgh Penguins and Sharks. He was selected by the Wild with the ninth overall pick of the 2010 NHL Draft.

Ceci, 31, has 15 points (four goals, 11 assists) and averages 21:46 of time in 54 games this season.

Also on Saturday, the Stars announced that forward Mason Marchment has been placed on injured reserve and defenseman Nils Lundkvist underwent season-ending shoulder surgery.

The move involving Marchment was retroactive to Dec. 31, four days after he took a puck to the face in a game against the Minnesota Wild. Marchment joins defenseman Miro Heiskanen on injured reserve.

Marchment, 29, has 27 points (12 goals, 15 assists) in 33 games this season.

Lundkvist, who was placed on long-term injured reserve along with Tyler Seguin, last played on Jan. 21 against the Carolina Hurricanes. Lundkvist, 24, has five assists in 39 games this season.

Also on Saturday, the Stars recalled Kyle McDonald and Christian Kyrou from the Texas Stars and lent defenseman Kyle Capobianco to their American Hockey League affiliate.
