John Gibson made 26 saves to pick up the win in his 500th NHL game as the host Anaheim Ducks edged the Dallas Stars 2-1 on Tuesday night.
It was the 202nd career victory for Gibson, who became the 11th active goaltender and 85th in NHL history to hit the 500-game mark.
Trevor Zegras and Cutter Gauthier scored for Anaheim, which won for the fifth time in six games. It was the Ducks’ first victory scoring two goals or less since a season-opening 2-0 shutout of San Jose on Oct. 12, making Anaheim just 2-24-4 for the season in that department.
Colin Blackwell scored and Jake Oettinger made 26 saves for Dallas, which had a five-game winning streak snapped. It marked the first loss of Oettinger’s career in nine starts against the Ducks.
Anaheim took a 1-0 lead at the 17:47 mark of the first period when Gauthier picked up a loose puck in the slot and then whipped a wrist shot into the upper right corner of the net.
Dallas tied it 1-1 early in the third period. Sam Steel hit Blackwell, who roofed a wrist shot, cutting down the slot with a backhand pass from the left circle.
The Ducks regained the lead just 2:38 later when Zegras, alone in front of the net, redirected Alex Killorn’s no-look pass from the left circle over Oettinger’s right shoulder for the game-winner.
Oettinger was pulled for an extra attacker with 2:08 remaining. After Frank Vatrano missed a shot at the empty net, Gibson made a glove save on a point-blank wrist shot by Wyatt Johnston from the bottom edge of the left circle.
Then Gibson sealed the win with another save — on Jason Robertson’s wrist shot from the right edge of the crease with 19 seconds left.
