No. 24 Michigan holds on, hands Indiana 5th straight loss

Danny Wolf had 20 points and nine rebounds to lead No. 24 Michigan to a 70-67 win over Indiana in Bloomington, Ind., on Saturday in a Big Ten contest.

Vladislav Goldin and Tre Donaldson each added 18 points for Michigan (18-5, 10-2), which has won three straight and stayed a half-game behind league-leading Purdue entering a matchup with the No. 7 Boilermakers on Tuesday in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Malik Reneau scored 16 points and Mackenzie Mgbako had 15 points for Indiana (14-10, 5-8), which has lost five straight games. The Hoosiers shot 41.7 percent (25 of 60) from the field and 31.6 percent (6 of 19) from 3-point range.

Michigan took a 66-61 lead with 1:25 remaining after a three-point play by Wolf, who was fouled while making a runner in the lane.

Indiana made it 66-63 with 1:01 left on a layup by Reneau, then got a stop on defense.

Following a timeout, Indiana went for a quick tie, but Mgbako missed a 3-pointer and Michigan got possession with 20.5 seconds left.

Donaldson was fouled on the ensuing inbounds, and he missed the front end of a one-in-one. Michigan elected to foul Trey Galloway with 12.5 seconds left, and Galloway made one free throw to make it 66-64.

Wolf was fouled after getting a rebound with 11.3 seconds left, and he made both free throws to give Michigan a 68-64 lead.

Following Reneau’s missed 3-pointer, Wolf hit two free throws to seal the win. A halfcourt shot by Indiana went in at the buzzer to finish the scoring.

After seeing an 18-point lead cut to one at 53-52, Michigan scored six straight to take a 59-52 lead with 6:56 remaining.

Indiana answered, scoring seven straight to forge a 59-59 tie with 4:08 left.

Michigan held a 43-27 lead at halftime, shooting 51.9 percent (14 of 27) in the first half. For the game, the visitors hit 44.4 percent (24 of 54) of their shots from the field and 23.8 percent (5 of 21) from 3-point range.

The Wolverines built a 49-32 lead with 17:18 remaining before Indiana rallied, going on a 12-2 run to cut Michigan’s lead to 51-44 with 13:27 left.
