Brian White scored at the beginning and the end of the second half, leading the host Vancouver Whitecaps to a 2-0 win over Saprissa on Thursday and a 3-2 aggregate victory in a first-round CONCACAF Champions Cup series.
Saprissa earned a 2-1 win over Vancouver last week in Costa Rica to open the two-game, total-goal series.
The Whitecaps advance to a round of 16 matchup against Mexico’s Monterrey, with the first leg scheduled for March 5 in Vancouver.
White put the Whitecaps on top when he headed in a cross from Jayden Nelson in the 46th minute. The goal leveled the series 2-2 but pulled Vancouver on top due to the away-goals tiebreaker.
White sealed the outcome in the first minute of second-half stoppage time. Tristan Blackmon’s free kick from the left side angle was saved, but White pounced on the rebound in front and knocked in a 6-yard shot.
