Wyatt Johnston’s 3 power-play goals lead Stars past Blues

Wyatt Johnston

Wyatt Johnston scored a hat trick to lead the host Dallas Stars past the St. Louis Blues 6-3 on Sunday.

Dallas went 4-for-4 with the man advantage and Johnston scored three of those power-play goals to give him 21 goals on the season.

Roope Hintz had a goal and three assists as the Stars won for the fifth time in six games. Mason Marchment and Matt Duchene had a goal and an assist each, and Thomas Harley had two assists.

The Blues outshot the Stars 42-21, but Dallas goaltender Jake Oettinger thwarted them by making 39 saves.

Zack Bolduc, Dylan Holloway and Nathan Walker scored for the Blues, whose four-game winning streak ended.

Joel Hofer allowed three goals on nine shots in the first period for St. Louis before coach Jim Montgomery replaced him with Jordan Binnington.

Dallas struck first with Marchment’s power-play goal off the rush from the right circle just 1:56 into the first period.

The Blues tied the game when Philip Broberg shot and Oskar Sundqvist poked the rebound over to Bolduc for a tap-in at the right post about 1 1/2 minutes later.

Duchene put the Stars up 2-1 by scoring from the left side off Marchment’s cross-ice pass at the 13:28 mark.

Holloway tied the game 2-2 with a power-play goal. He took a pass back from Brayden Schenn and scored after cutting to the high slot at the 18:34 mark of a busy opening period.

Johnston gave Dallas a 3-2 lead by scoring a power-play goal off the rush with 1.3 seconds left in the first period. He converted a give-and-go play with Hintz.

The Stars boosted their lead to 4-2 just 1:06 into the second period. After a Blues turnover, Hintz converted a give-and-go play with Jason Robertson on a 2-on-1 break.

St. Louis cut its deficit to 4-3 when Alexei Toropchenko got a partial breakaway and Walker batted in the rebound while following up at the 8:02 mark.

Johnston made it 5-3 by scoring a power-play goal off Hintz’s pass to the right flank just over halfway through the third period. Then Johnston made it 6-3 with another power-play goal, this time by converting a rebound into the slot with 8:49 left in regulation.
