Linus Ullmark’s 48 saves help Senators extend streak with win over Red Wings

Linus Ullmark made 48 saves and Dylan Cozens’ power-play goal with 5:04 remaining broke a tie to give the host Ottawa Senators a 2-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Monday night.

David Perron also scored for the Senators, who have won four of their last five games.

Dylan Larkin provided the lone goal for the Red Wings. Six straight losses have pushed Detroit outside of the Eastern Conference playoff picture. Cam Talbot stopped 21 shots in the defeat.

Cozens’ game-winner came on a shot from the left circle that deflected off Detroit defenseman Justin Holl. It was Cozens’ first goal with Ottawa since being acquired from the Buffalo Sabres at the NHL trade deadline on Friday. It was his second game with the Senators.

Larkin tied the game 1-1 on a shot from the left circle 2:58 into the third period after taking a pass from Lucas Raymond. It was Larkin’s 27th goal and third in his last three games.

Perron’s power-play goal 7:39 into the first period gave Ottawa a 1-0 lead. He beat Talbot with a snap shot from the left circle after Detroit failed to clear the puck along the boards. Perron played with the Red Wings last season.

Despite the Senators scoring the only goal, Detroit dominated the middle period with a 27-9 advantage in shots on goal. But Ullmark stopped all of them, including a shot from in front by J.T. Compher during a Red Wings’ power play with less than two minutes left in the period, a sprawling save on Alex DeBrincat during the same power play and an impossible-looking save on Holl during a flurry in the middle of the frame.

The 27 shots in a period ties a road franchise record for the Wings.

Senators defenseman Jake Sanderson hit the crossbar 22 seconds into the second period.

The Red Wings’ Craig Smith and the Senators’ Fabian Zetterlund made their debuts with their new teams after being acquired prior to the deadline. Smith arrived from the Chicago Blackhawks and Zetterlund from the San Jose Sharks.
