Hurricanes ride five-game win streak into rematch with Red Wings

There’s less stress for the Carolina Hurricanes in some regard, and that might be a good thing going into the final month of the season.

The Detroit Red Wings might be more relaxed, as well, after finally breaking a slump and showcasing some rare offensive spark.

The teams meet for the second time this month on Friday night in Raleigh, N.C.

The Hurricanes are rolling with five consecutive victories following a 2-6-0 patch.

“Inconsistency has been something maybe we’ve struggled with a little bit throughout the year,” Hurricanes defenseman Sean Walker said. “You’re going to go through those highs and lows. I think everybody will say this is the time of year you really want to find your game, and I think we’re kind of getting to that point.”

Carolina forward Jack Roslovic said some of the tension around the Hurricanes might have faded in the week since the trade deadline.

“It was obviously a little bit of a crazy month or whatever it was,” Roslovic said. “It’s great to have guys that are going to be here for the long haul. Hopefully, we can get into a good rhythm. (We have a) good group.”

There are concerns regarding forward Andrei Svechnikov and defenseman Dmitry Orlov. Svechnikov suffered an injury Sunday and is listed as doubtful for Friday night. Orlov (undisclosed injury) has missed three straight games.

“I know what we have in there,” Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “We’re still able to grind it out.”

Carolina’s 4-1 victory against Tampa Bay on Tuesday night came with eight players recording one point apiece. Winger Seth Jarvis has produced his second three-game goal streak of the season.

Walker scored for the first time in more than three months.

“I think everybody has probably seen that I’ve had a lot of Grade-A opportunities and haven’t really capitalized on it, so it was nice to get that one in there,” Walker said.

The Red Wings showed life with Wednesday night’s 7-3 victory against visiting Buffalo, snapping a six-game losing streak after a spirited fight-heavy third period.

During Detroit’s losing string, the Red Wings scored more than two goals only once. Therefore, the seven-goal outburst was notable, with Patrick Kane and Marco Kasper each scoring two. Kane also had three assists for his fourth career five-point outing.

It was the first five-point game for a Red Wing in nearly six years. Kane has 31 points in his last 25 games.

“The power play had a good night,” Kane said. “Sometimes the puck goes in, sometimes it doesn’t, so it was nice to see them go in.”

The Hurricanes beat the Red Wings 2-1 on March 4 in Detroit. Frederik Andersen, who should be in the net Friday night based on the Hurricanes’ goalie rotation, made 24 saves in the first meeting with the Red Wings, while Jordan Martinook and Jordan Staal scored Carolina’s goals.

Ex-Hurricanes goalie Alex Lyon made 28 saves for Detroit in that game. Elmer Soderblom had the Red Wings’ only goal.
