Nazem Kadri’s OT goal gives surging Flames win over Islanders

Nazem Kadri

Nazem Kadri scored with 1:07 left in overtime Saturday for the visiting Calgary Flames, who continued their timely surge with a come-from-behind 4-3 win over the New York Islanders in Elmont, N.Y.

Islanders goalie Marcus Hogberg turned back a breakaway by Morgan Frost, but the Flames retained possession and Kadri scored from the left faceoff circle.

Kadri’s goal capped a chaotic final few minutes. The Islanders’ Kyle MacLean briefly put the hosts ahead with 2:51 left in regulation before the Flames’ Jonathan Huberdeau tied the score just 27 seconds later.

Long Island native Matt Coronato, who grew up about 30 miles from UBS Arena in Greenlawn, N.Y., scored twice for the Flames (33-25-11, 77 points), who won their third straight to remain two points behind the St. Louis Blues in the race for the final Western Conference wild card spot. Huberdeau had the primary assist on both of Coronato’s goals.

Goalie Dan Vladar made 26 saves.

Bo Horvat, who played in his 800th career game Saturday, and Marc Gatcomb scored in the first for the Islanders (32-28-9, 73 points), who had their three-game winning streak snapped and missed a chance to at least temporarily move into a tie for the final Eastern Conference wild card spot with the Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers.

Hogberg recorded 31 saves.

A turnover by Hogberg led to Gatcomb’s goal just 36 seconds after the opening faceoff. Huberdeau picked off Hogberg’s clearing pass along the boards and passed to Coronato, who skated from the middle of the right faceoff circle and towards the blue line before whirling and firing a shot that sailed past Hogberg’s glove as he was screened by Flames defenseman Joel Hanley, who cut in front of Hogberg.

Horvat scored on his milestone day a little more than 10 minutes later. Tony DeAngelo’s shot glanced off the skate of Calgary center Kevin Rooney and to Horvat, who buried the rebound in the wide open left corner of the net with 9:14 left.

Gatcomb capped an end-to-end rush with 2:19 remaining after taking a pass from Maxim Tsyplakov, who threaded the puck between the Flames’ Jake Bean and Ryan Lomberg, and firing a shot under Vladar’s glove.

The Flames outshot the Islanders 13-6 in the middle period and tied the score on Coronato’s second goal at the 6:03 mark. Huberdeau, in the left faceoff circle, passed backwards to Coronato, who had a step on Pierre Engvall and beat Hogberg over his glove before New York defenseman Adam Pelech could get in position to block the shot.
