Garrett Crochet pitched eight shutout innings, and the Boston Red Sox beat the host Baltimore Orioles 3-0 to snap a four-game losing streak Wednesday night.
Trevor Story homered and had three hits — more than he had all season entering the game — and Rafael Devers ended a horrid season-beginning slump with an RBI double and later added a single. Devers broke a 0-for-21 stretch.
Crochet (1-0), a left-hander, allowed four hits and one walk while striking out eight. He threw 102 pitches in his first outing since reports surfaced that he had agreed to a long-term contract extension.
In his last four innings on the mound, Crochet allowed only one base runner, and that would-be threat was squashed when Baltimore’s Cedric Mullins grounded into a double play to end the eighth inning.
Aroldis Chapman worked the ninth. Adley Rutschman drew a one-out walk. However, Tyler O’Neill struck out, and Ryan Mountcastle grounded out to end the game.
Orioles starter Zach Eflin (0-2) lasted six innings, allowing three runs on eight hits with five strikeouts. He has surrendered a home run in both of his outings this season.
The Orioles managed four singles and two walks. O’Neill struck out three times.
Baltimore has alternated wins and losses through six games this season. The Orioles have scored a total of three runs in their three defeats.
Kristian Campbell also had two hits for Boston, which ranked up 10 hits.
The teams have split the first two games, heading into Thursday afternoon’s series finale.
Story, who was 2-for-15 this season at the start of the game, smashed Eflin’s curveball for a home run with one out in the second inning for his first homer of the season.
The Red Sox got their second run on Ceddanne Rafaela’s fifth-inning single. Rafaela scored later in the inning on Devers’ double.
