Spencer Torkelson hits walk-off double, Tigers sweep White Sox

torkelson

Spencer Torkelson’s two-run double in the ninth completed a three-run rally as the host Detroit Tigers topped the Chicago White Sox 4-3 on Sunday.

Torkelson’s double off Jordan Leasure followed Andy Ibanez’s bases-loaded walk. The Tigers loaded the bases against Fraser Ellard (0-1) in the ninth before Leasure entered.

John Brebbia (1-0) picked up the win in relief. Javier Baez had three hits and drove in a run for Detroit, which swept the three-game weekend series.

Detroit’s Jackson Jobe gave up three runs (two earned) and four hits while striking out four in five innings. Brenan Hanifee retired all six batters he faced.

Martin Perez gave up one run and four hits while striking out four in 6 1/3 innings for Chicago. Perez held Minnesota hitless for six innings while posting nine strikeouts on Monday in his White Sox debut.

Andrew Vaughn had an RBI single for Chicago, which has lost five straight. Andrew Benintendi departed in the fifth inning due to left adductor tightness.

The White Sox scored twice in the first. Mike Tauchman led off with a single, Luis Robert Jr. walked and a fielder’s choice put runners on the corners. Vaughn’s single scored Tauchman and Benintendi moved to third on an error by right fielder Manuel Margot. Matt Thaiss’ sacrifice fly knocked in Benintendi.

Detroit got on the board in the bottom of the second. Margot led off with a single and moved to second on Kerry Carpenter’s flyout. Margot scored on Baez’s two-out single to center.

Chicago scratched out a run in the fourth to make it 3-1. Thaiss reached on an infield hit and Miguel Vargas walked. A sacrifice moved up both runners and Thaiss scored on Jacob Amaya’s sacrifice fly.

The Tigers came up empty in the fifth despite a leadoff double from Baez.

Detroit also threated in the seventh. Trey Sweeney and Zach McKinstry drew two-out walks against reliever Mike Clevinger. Cam Booser was then called in to face pinch-hitter Riley Greene in a lefty-lefty matchup. Greene struck out to leave two more baserunners stranded.
