Max Meyer, Marlins stifle Mets on 2-hit shutout

Marlins

Max Meyer combined with two relievers on a two-hitter and Matt Mervis hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs Wednesday afternoon as the visiting Miami Marlins beat the New York Mets, 5-0.

Meyer (1-1) pitched 5 1/3 hitless innings before allowing a single to Francisco Lindor. He tied a career high by pitching 6 1/3 innings. Meyer allowed a single to Pete Alonso to open the seventh and was lifted after retiring Brandon Nimmo on a fly ball.

Meyer struck out four, walked two and recorded eight more outs on the ground. It was the second time in 14 career starts Meyer has pitched 6 1/3 innings.

Mervis and Nick Fortes hit RBI singles in the fifth following a throwing error by New York second baseman Brett Baty. Jonah Bride added an RBI single in the ninth off New York closer Edwin Diaz before Mervis lifted a two-run homer to right field for a 5-0 lead.

Anthony Bender followed Meyer and pitched 1 2/3 hitless innings and Lake Bachar completed Miami’s second shutout when Dane Myers crashed into the center field fence to get a fly ball by Alonso.

New York’s Tylor Megill (2-1) started the game by issuing consecutive four-pitch walks to Xavier Edwards and Kyle Stowers before settling in. The right-hander allowed two unearned runs on six hits to go along with seven strikeouts and three walks in four-plus innings.

The Mets saw a six-game winning streak end and took their first home loss. New York was blanked for the first time this season and Juan Soto saw his season-opening, 11-game on-base streak stopped.

After stranding seven runners in the first four innings, the Marlins put together a rally in the fifth.

Stowers opened with a single to left and on a ground ball by Bride, Baty attempted to get the forceout at second base, but his throw sailed over Lindor. On the next pitch, Mervis singled to center and Stowers easily scored.

After New York reliever Max Kranick got two outs, Fortes made it 2-0 by hitting a bloop single to left field.
