The Chicago Cubs obtained left-handed reliever Tom Cosgrove from the San Diego Padres on Thursday for cash considerations.
Cosgrove, 28, was recently designated for assignment by the Padres.
Chicago designated right-hander Caleb Kilian for assignment to open up a 40-man roster spot.
Cosgrove is 1-3 with a 3.95 ERA and one save in 72 big league appearances. This season, he was 1-0 with a 7.36 ERA in four appearances for Triple-A El Paso.
Cosgrove had a stellar rookie season for San Diego in 2023 when he went 1-2 with a 1.75 ERA in 54 appearances. He limited batters to a .173 average, the lowest in the majors among qualified rookies.
He made 18 major league appearances last season but struggled and was 0-1 with an 11.66 ERA.
Kilian, 27, is 0-4 with a 9.22 ERA in eight games (five starts) for Chicago from 2022-24. Kilian allowed six runs in 2 1/3 innings in his lone start for Triple-A Iowa this season.
