Matt Corral threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Cade Johnson with 33 seconds remaining, then ran for the winning extra point as the host Birmingham Stallions edged the Arlington Renegades 10-9 on Friday.
Arlington (2-1) led 9-0 after halftime after field goals of 27, 33 and 20 yards by Lucas Havrisik.
Harrison Mevis made a 32-yard field goal for Birmingham (2-1) to slice the deficit to six early in the third quarter.
The Stallions forced a punt and got the ball back with 2:09 remaining in regulation, and Corral led an 11-play, 71-yard drive.
After falling behind, the Renegades couldn’t get the ball to midfield in the final seconds.
Cassel completed 19 of 41 passes for 255 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He was the team’s leading rusher with 24 yards on four carries. Johnson had three catches for 63 yards.
Arlington quarterback Luis Perez connected on 26 of 38 passes for 204 yards. Kalen Ballage ran 16 times for 41 yards, and Sal Cannella finished with six receptions for 52 yards.
