Will Smith hit a three-run home run in a four-run third inning and Tommy Edman had four hits as the Los Angeles Dodgers earned a 6-2 victory over the visiting Colorado Rockies on Tuesday amid the annual Jackie Robinson Day celebration.
Rookie left-hander Jack Dreyer (2-0) had four strikeouts in 1 2/3 relief innings to earn the win. The Dodgers have won the first two games of the three-game series and can earn their third home sweep of the season Wednesday.
Los Angeles was playing without right fielder Teoscar Hernandez (illness) for the second consecutive game.
Jacob Stallings hit a two-run double for the Rockies, who saw their losing streak reach five games. Colorado has scored five total runs during the skid.
Rockies right-hander Ryan Feltner (0-1) gave up five runs on five hits with six walks in 2 2/3 innings.
The Dodgers took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a Chris Taylor double-play grounder after loading the bases on two walks and a single from Edman. Two more Feltner walks in the third inning were followed by Smith’s home run, his second of the season, for a 4-0 lead.
The Dodgers added another run in the third on a two-out RBI single from Chris Taylor to score Edman, who doubled.
The Rockies got two runs back in the fourth on Stallings’ two-run double off Dodgers right-hander Landon Knack. The Dodgers added an insurance run in the eighth on a two-out RBI single from Freddie Freeman.
Dreyer’s five outs started a run where the Los Angeles bullpen held Colorado scoreless over the final 4 2/3 innings. Four Dodgers relievers combined to allow one hit with eight strikeouts.
While wearing caps from the franchise’s Brooklyn days, the Dodgers improved to 17-4 on Jackie Robinson Day since the celebration began in 2004.
Los Angeles is now 12-2 at home against Colorado over the past three seasons and 22-6 overall between the teams in the same timeframe.
