The San Diego Padres placed veteran outfielder Jason Heyward on the 10-day injured list Saturday due to left knee inflammation and promoted outfielder Tirso Ornelas from Triple-A El Paso.
The 35-year-old Heyward, who has batted .190 with one homer and six RBIs in 17 games this season, joins center fielders Jackson Merrill (right hamstring strain) and Brandon Lockridge (left hamstring strain) on the injured list. Heyward appeared in 11 consecutive games before needing to sit out Friday night to address his knee woes.
The 25-year-old Ornelas signed for a $1.5 million bonus in 2017, but joins the Padres still in search of his major league debut. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound left-handed hitter has racked up 28 homers and a .291/.367/.462 slash line in 203 games across four seasons for El Paso.
Ornelas has posted a .281 average with one homer and seven RBIs in 17 games in Triple-A this season.
