Theo Corbeanu scored his first MLS goal and Toronto FC won in the state of Utah for the first time since 2007 with Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Real Salt Lake at Sandy, Utah.
Toronto FC goalkeeper Sean Johnson made six saves while registering his third shutout of the season and 105th of his career. He ranks fourth all-time in MLS history.
Toronto (1-4-4, 7 points) was 0-10-2 in its last 12 road matches — counting a 2020 CONCACAF Champions League game — in the series with RSL.
The franchise’s only win in Utah came in the first-ever meeting between the teams. That’s when Toronto recorded a 2-1 victory over Real Salt Lake on July 4, 2007 in a match played on the University of Utah campus in Salt Lake City.
Overall, Toronto has a four-match unbeaten streak, having played to a draw in each of its last three.
Real Salt Lake (3-6-0, 9 points) outshot Toronto by a resounding 23-2 as the visitors packed their defense to protect their lead. RSL placed six shots on target while falling for the fourth time in the last five matches.
Real Salt Lake also finished the match with 10 men after leading scorer Diego Luna received a red card for violent conduct in the 61st minute.
Rafael Cabral didn’t make any saves for RSL.
The Toronto goal in the ninth minute was set up by a misplay in the Salt Lake back end.
The 22-year-old Corbeanu ended up with the ball and sent a right-footed shot past Cabral.
Salt Lake’s chances of rallying took a hit with the loss of Luna, who has three goals.
Luna got mixed up with Toronto’s Raoul Petretta on a set piece and both players fell to the turf. Luna appeared to kick toward Petretta to help get himself loose, and players from both teams came together to push and engage in name-calling.
When the dust settled, Luna was given a red call and Petretta received a yellow card. Luna’s red card was reviewed but held up.
