Reds keep taking leads, eke out 8-7 win over Rockies

Reds, Rockies

Spencer Steer homered, Noelvi Marte and Santiago Espinal had three hits each, and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Colorado Rockies 8-7 on a drizzly Friday night in Denver.

Elly De La Cruz, Blake Dunn and Austin Hays had two hits each, Graham Ashcraft (1-2) pitched an inning of relief and Emilio Pagan picked up his sixth save in seven opportunities for Cincinnati.

Jordan Beck hit two home runs for the second straight game and has five in the last three games for Colorado. Michael Toglia finished with three hits and three RBIs, and Hunter Goodman had two doubles and scored three runs.

The Reds went ahead for good in the seventh inning. Steer was hit by a pitch with one out, Espinal singled to third and the runners advanced to second and third on Ryan McMahon’s throwing error.

Angel Chivilli (0-2), the second Rockies pitcher, walked Austin Wynns to load the bases. Scott Alexander came on and walked the first batter he faced to bring home a run. Cincinnati made it 8-6 on TJ Friedl’s RBI groundout.

Beck’s second homer of the game and his fifth of the season made it a one-run game in the eighth.

The Reds took a 1-0 lead on Marte’s RBI single in the first off starter Kyle Freeland, but Colorado tied it on Adael Amador’s bases-loaded walk in the second off Andrew Abbott.

Then both teams had rallies in the fourth.

Marte drove in a run with a groundout and Steer hit a two-run homer to left, his second of the season, to make it 4-1. The Rockies answered when Beck led off the bottom of the inning with his first homer of the night, and Toglia tied it with a ground-rule double to left-center to drive in two.

Espinal’s RBI single in the fifth chased Freeland, and Dunn made it 6-4 with a single off Chivilli. Colorado matched the two runs in the bottom of the fifth on Toglia’s run-scoring single and Brenton Doyle’s sacrifice fly.

Freeland allowed six runs on 10 hits and a walk in 4 1/3 innings, while Abbott gave up four runs on five hits and five walks in four innings.
