The St. Louis Cardinals selected the contract of infielder/outfielder Jose Barrero from Triple-A Memphis on Monday and optioned infielder Thomas Saggese.
To get Barrero on the 40-man roster, right-hander Ryan Loutos was designated for assignment.
Barrero, 27, is set to make his Cardinals debut. He played four seasons with the Cincinnati Reds (2020-23), batting .186 with four home runs and 32 RBIs in 139 games, with 104 of those at shortstop.
Saggese, 23, batted .341 with one home run and seven RBIs in 14 games with the Cardinals this season and has batted .267 with two home runs and 11 RBIs in 32 games for the club over the past two seasons.
Loutos, 26, had a 3.38 ERA with two saves in eight innings over eight relief appearances at Memphis this season. He pitched in three games for the Cardinals last season and did not allow a run in 2 1/3 innings.
