Bailey Ober, Twins hand Guardians another lopsided loss

Minnesota Cleveland

Bailey Ober allowed one run over 7 2/3 innings and Edouard Julien set the pace for Minnesota’s big offensive night with a leadoff homer as the Twins won their fourth straight, 11-1 over the host Cleveland Guardians on Monday night.

Jonah Bride had three hits, Ryan Jeffers clubbed a two-run homer off position player Will Wilson in the eighth and had three RBIs for Minnesota, which followed a 5-1 homestand by rapping out a season-high 17 hits on Monday. Byron Buxton and Ty France recorded two hits and two RBIs apiece.

Ober (3-1) gave up only Jhonkensy Noel’s RBI single in the fifth. He yielded eight hits, struck out two and did not issue a walk while winning his third consecutive start.

Gavin Williams (2-2) allowed four runs, seven hits and two walks while lasting just two innings for the Guardians, who have been outscored 31-7 during their three-game losing streak. Williams fanned two.

Julien sent Williams’ first pitch of the night over the center field wall. The Twins added another run in the inning after Carlos Correa (two hits) and France singled, then Jeffers delivered a two-out, RBI double off the center field wall.

Williams’ troubles continued in the second. With one out, Bride singled, then Harrison Bader and Julien each drew a walk. Buxton followed with a lined single to center that scored a pair.

Minnesota added to the margin in the fifth. After Cleveland reliever Paul Sewald exited due to an apparent injury with two outs and the bases empty, Tim Herrin walked Jeffers, then surrendered three consecutive singles to Mickey Gasper (two hits, RBI), Bride and Bader, the last two each driving home a run.

The Guardians’ Gabriel Arias led off the bottom of the fifth with a double. He moved to second on Bo Naylor’s groundout and scored via Noel’s smash hit to left.

Minnesota made it 8-1 in the sixth on France’s two-run double to deep center. France scored on Gasper’s line-drive single to right with two out.
